Yorkshire Dales Weekend Workshop
We hope to run this workshop again in 2009

Join us for a long weekend of photographic excursions and tuition in the Yorkshire Dales this autumn. Following the popularity of the Umbrian workshops we’re running this autumn workshop for photographic enthusiasts based at the incomparably situated High Trenhouse near Malham (www.high-trenhouse.co.uk)

The Course :

Each course will comprise a 2-night stay at High Trenhouse with 2 full days of photographic tuition, excursions in the Yorkshire Dales, tutorials and demonstrations. The size of each course will consist of a maximum of 10 photographic guests guided by myself and my highly experienced associate Jon Gooding. The courses are aimed at anyone who wants to improve their photography. With a program of individual guidance, hands on demonstrations in the field whilst waiting for the light, picture shows and specialised tutorials on the regular photographic forays all levels will be catered for. The central theme of the instruction of how we use our eyes to develop a photographic vision is backed up with sound practical advice on how to be in the right place at the right time, and how to make the most of it photographically once there.

With our two four-wheel drive vehicles we will transport you to locations with strong photographic potential when the light is best, at dawn and dusk. The days will be full, starting with a dawn photographic shoot and ending with a dinner back at the hotel. Additionally we’ll ask you to bring examples of your own work for all the group to discuss and enjoy and to enable myself and Jon to advise on how best you can continue to develop your photography. Should the weather be unfavourable we’ll have the facility to demonstrate post-production techniques and show images from all over the world. Of course all activities are optional. If you fancy a lie-in, that’s fine.

The Region :

The hills and dales of the Yorkshire Dales National Park mark one of my favourite corners of England. The photographic potential is huge, from the rugged open moors to the lush dales, all framed with the unique rural architecture of stonewalls and barns. The villages nestling in the Dales look like they were built especially for the delight of artists, and the incomparable limestone landscape is a constant draw. The combination of the autumn light and colours at this time of year is a photographic feast. But enough of me waffling on about the area; here’s some photographs.

We’ll be staying at High Trenhouse, which is beautifully situated in the heart of the Dales near Malham (www.high-trenhouse.co.uk)
Our wing is given over entirely to our needs.

We can’t include non-photographic partners in the photographic excursions due to the fact we don’t have room in the 4x4s, but they are welcome to join us at High Trenhouse. We will all dine together and it is a great area for contemplative walks.

The Cost :

Photographic Guest £690.00
Non-Photographic Partner £160.00

What this includes:

all the photographic tuition, excursions and activities

Details :

Equipment: Bring whatever gear you use. We only stipulate that you should be familiar with your own equipment. Whether it’s film or digital is up to you, our tuition will be relevant to both mediums and all formats. The only requirement is that you bring a tripod.
Language: All tuition will be in English.
Fitness: Although we will be using our 4x4 vehicles to access remote locations a modicum of fitness is required. Typically we may need to walk for 15 minutes over hilly terrain with our equipment to reach some locations. Additionally a photographic walk of about 3 km over undulating terrain is part of the itinerary for the first day.
Arrival Time: We kick off by all meeting each other at High Trenhouse on the Friday afternoon (October 31st) at 1330. After introductions and a brief chat we’ll then be going out on location for an afternoon shoot. Days are short this time of year so we’ll be back in good time for an evening tutorial and dinner.
Departure Time: We finish the course at midday on the Sunday 2nd November.
Payment: We take all major credit cards. A deposit of £200 (£80 for a non-photographic partner) will be required to secure your booking, with the balance due 2 months prior to the commencement of the course.
