Early rises are routine for landscape photographers, they go with the territory, along with sweaty backs and wistful glances at the sky. But this time of year in these northern isles it does get a bit extreme. At 2.40am on the longest day of the year we were heading for a hilltop overlooking the Blackmore Vale. We? The Chasing the Light Crew; Mike on camera, Matt on sound. They were in shock; they’ll admit to not being early morning people and were I suspect cursing the day they met me. But this is the game we’re immersed in this month and the next; filming our next DVD Photography In The Raw. I can’t believe it’s been three years since we shot the first DVD Chasing the Light, but we’ve soon slipped back into the groove. Mike’s got a new High Definition camera, Matt’s got a new pole for his fluffy microphone and I’m able to shoot video inserts through the lens on my Canon 5D mkII as I waffle on about filters and focusing points. We’ve worked various tantalising locations around the south west of England and had a fab few days on location in North Wales with gorgeous light and a Welsh curry every night. Snowdonia isn’t often associated with fine Asian cuisine but The Lemon Grass restaurant was the only option in Dolgellau at 10pm, so we returned curried out and totally knackered from the long days but with some great footage in the can and on the hard drive. It’s coming together well.

Creating strong photography is never easy, doing it on cue for the camera adds a whole new dimension. On Bulbarrow Hill it came together nicely, there was a touch of mist in the vale below, true it was a bit hazy but still a magical place to be for sunrise on the summer solstice. Filming continues through July in Wessex and France; Photography In The Raw will be released on DVD late September. Watch this space.

September is looming large on our radar; as well as the DVD my next book Full Frame has gone to print and will be published then, in time for our Edinburgh Chasing the Light Road Show. Regarding the Road Shows if you’re contemplating coming to Edinburgh or Andover we’ve a new video clip to whet the appetite. But now, it’s time for us to head for France. Firstly to where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean; then for a rendezvous with the Crew for Bastille Day at Carcassonne. More filming, more exposures, more baguettes, more misty dawns on the Canal du Midi, more avenues of trees, more cooking on the tailgate and lunches in sun dappled squares. Oh well, I guess it’s got to be done.

On the website this month we have Wendy’s Wanderings reporting from on location during the filming of Photography In The Raw. We don’t have a catering truck or a wardrobe department but Wendy has been on hand with a flask, the pork pies and an occasional scotch egg to keep us sustained and crucially to let me know in a subtle or sometimes not so subtle way when I’m talking absolute drivel in front of the camera. Also just up is this month’s Despatches; part 3 in the lens series looking at the world of wide angles; it is top bedtime reading.

I have to pack the car now. We must be getting on; time was when we’d head off with a rucsac and a tiny backpacking tent. Now we take table, chairs and cushions. It comes to us all. But I also have the complete arsenal of cameras and lenses and am itching to expose in amongst the vineyards and sunflower fields of Languedoc. We’ll see you on a workshop, or at a Road Show. For those in the northern hemisphere; enjoy the summer. For those of you South of the Line, the days are getting longer.

Keep exposing.

This month we're up to our viewfinders in events!

There's plenty to choose from if you fancy joining us, including a handful of tickets left for a workshop David is running with the folks at PhotoRadar. It's a one day workshop based at the National Trust's home of photography - Lacock Abbey, in Wiltshire, on Saturday 24th July. Check it out here. Just for you, there's a cheeky little offer too - if you put NOTON1 in when purchasing tickets, you’ll get a tasty £5 off.   click here to learn more about this workshop...

Tickets are selling like hot-cakes for both of the new road show dates - take a look at the opening video sequence here - just to get you in the mood. If you are thinking of coming along, book early to avoid disappointment. Previous events have been a sell out.
If you can round up a group of friends/fellow photographers we'll even give you one free ticket, with every 10 purchased - perfect for camera clubs and photographic societies. Just phone the office for details.
Edinburgh - Royal College of Physicians - 28th September
Andover - Lights Theatre - 10th November

Or if you are somewhere in the middle - geographically speaking - why not join David in Yorkshire for his workshop in October (8th-10th). There are just a couple of places left - and all other workshops for 2010 are now sold out. Going, going, gone!   click here to learn more about this workshop...

And finally for everyone who loves their camera kit (and let's face it, that's most of us!!) David is in therapy right now...after being parted from the 17mm Canon TSE.
He's been tilting and shifting all over the place in Italy, Paris and Dorset, but finally the precious beast had to go back to the lovely people at Canon. We're taking bets as to how long before there's some retail therapy....
