Filters. They are the most basic of photographic tools. Graduated neutral density filters, or grads, are a landscape photographer’s best friend, absolutely essential for amongst other things balancing the exposure between the muddy bits and the cloudy bits. And straight neutral density filters are a vital necessity if like me you sometimes need to slow the world down, lengthen exposures and use a bit of movement in your stunning images. Breaking waves, swaying trees, wafting grass, bustling people, speeding tuk tuks; a bit of motion blur can often transform a picture. The way I use filters has changed since the film era, but the absolute necessity of carrying a comprehensive set has not. One of the most frequently asked technical question is what filters I carry and why. Well, to cut a long story short I’ve decided to create my own definitive filter kit. It’s a combination of filters that I consider to be the perfect combination, one enabling the photographer to subtly control contrast and prolong exposures in all sorts of different lighting situations.

The David Noton Chasing the Light Filter Kit is made by Lee Filters, the acknowledged leader in the field of professional high quality camera filters. I’ve used Lee Filters for decades. Why? Its simple. Their neutral density filters are truly, well, neutral. It sounds obvious, but try using a cheap grad for a long exposure at dusk on the west coast of Ireland and you’ll see some pretty gruesome magenta colour casts creeping in. Each Lee Filters grad is hand made, with the colour fidelity and optical quality monitored to incredible standards of accuracy. I know, I’ve seen them being made. My filter kit is not cheap, but hey, they are the best. And if you’ve spent wads of your hard earned dosh on high resolution cameras and lenses you’d be mad to put any old bit of cheap plastic in front of your expensive optics. What else are you going to spend it on, a new kitchen? Actually, the price of £290.00 plus VAT for the all inclusive kit represents a saving of £45.86 over buying the items separately, so we really are being good to you.

The David Noton Chasing the Light Filter Kit is only available from this website.
It comprises:

  • -0.9ND grad (hard)
  • -0.6ND grad (hard)
  • -0.6ND grad (soft)
  • -0.9ND ProGlass Standard
  • -2 slot filter holder
  • -filter wrap
  • -adaptor ring of your choice (67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm)
  • -triple filter carrying pouch
  • -cleaning cloth

The principal use of the ND grads is to hold back the exposure on skies enabling the photographer to expose and record all the detail in the landscape. But they are of use to all those location photographers, not just landscapers, who have to deal with burnt out skies. The straight ND filter is a pro-glass filter optimised for digital use to provide consistent transmission capabilities right across the visible and invisible spectrum, curing the bug bear of red or purple fringing associated with some long exposure/ND filter combinations. It all comes with the rugged 2 slot Lee Filter holder, a cleaning cloth and an adaptor ring of your choice in a handy portable protective pouch to slip in your camera bag. It will change your life!
